Open Justice Information Exchange System

The OJIES Project represents the effort to take all of the CJIS Suite applications off of PowerBuilder and code them for the web using Java.  This will result in a number of improvements in accessibility, version control, deployment, upgrades, and security.  Over the course of this project, each of the existing PowerBuilder applications will be migrated to the new technology, leveraging common functionality across many applications to standardize re-usable components, making the system easier to support and enhance.  Delivery via the web enables JIS to expand access to data, as appropriate, via a mechanism that does not require licenses or client software to be installed on each user’s workstation.  This will allow Metro employees to perform their duties in any location through a secure, authenticated logon.

Public Defender Application

The second application for the OJIES suite is underway.  Analysis began for the Public Defender’s office in December, 2006.  JIS has been worked closely with the Public Defender’s staff in gathering the information that captures the current application functionality as well as the current business processes.  Combining that with the desired enhancements, the new web-based application will provide the Public Defender’s office with a remarkable tool.

Development began in May, 2007.  Some of the basic functionality was demonstrated at an OJIES Steering Committee meeting revealing how the future applications will function.  As more development is deployed, the new functions will be shown at later committee meetings.  This will help others gain insight as to what types of improvements can be made to their future applications.  As always, JIS strives to create applications that will increase the capability and efficiency of each agency.  The development phase of the Public Defender application is targeted for completion by the first quarter of 2008 with implementation to follow in the second quarter.

Adult Probation Application

The Adult Probation group is the third in line for the OJIES project.  This group consists of Davidson County Community Corrections, General Sessions Probation and DUI School.  Going forward, new articles will be based on the individual organizations as JIS is going to take the current Adult probation (ADPB) system that all three agencies are currently using and create three separate systems.

Community Corrections will be the first of these orgranizations to enter into the OJIES arena.  The JIS business team assigned to the Community Corrections project has begun to meet with staff members of the Community Corrections office to review their processes and requirements for the new application.  The team will work on gathering requirements for the current functionality in the system and will also identify new requests.  Community Corrections has some wonderful ideas on their wish list and these features are sure to be desired by future OJIES users.
